The Antarctic winter meant perpetual darkness outside, making the exterior cameras show nothing but black emptiness, occasionally broken by swirling snow.
I took a sip of lukewarm coffee and rolled my shoulders, trying to work out the stiffness. I scanned each monitor methodically, the way I always did. Camera 1, main entrance clear. Camera 2, Research lab corridor empty. Camera 3, Generator housing normal.
Camera 4, exterior North face. And I froze, coffee mug halfway to my lips. There was someone standing out there. I leaned forward, squinting at the screen. A figure stood motionless in the snow about 20 yards from the building.

Just wanted someone to know where I am if I don't come back over. That's not funny man. Be careful radio when you're back inside. Over will do, over and out. I pulled on my thermal gear from the locker next to the control room door.
Base layer, mid layer, outer shell, insulated pants, balaclava, goggles, and heavy gloves. I grabbed a flashlight and made sure my radio was secure in my chest pocket.
