Antarctica stretched out before me, a vast white wilderness that held secrets millions of years old, the kind of secrets I dedicated my life to uncovering.

The cold hit me like a slap when I stepped off the plane. Even through my heavy parka, it cut right to the bone. I'd read about Antarctic temperatures, of course, but experiencing -40° was something else entirely. My breath froze in front of my face as I followed the other passengers toward the main complex.

McMurdo wasn't what most people pictured when they thought of an Antarctic research station. Instead of some tiny outpost, it was more like a small town. While waiting for the others to finish their discussions, I idly scrolled through different views of the surrounding area. Something caught my eye in one of the images, a mountain range about 30 miles east of our position. I zoomed in, adjusting the contrast to get a better look. The formations didn't look natural. There were too many straight lines, too many regular patterns that seemed almost architectural.

I continued examining the images, switching between different satellite passes and angles. The more I looked, the more convinced I became that these weren't natural formations. What are you looking at so intently? Layla asked, appearing beside me with her cup in hand. These mountains, I said, pointing to the screen.

Do those look like natural geological formations to you? Layla leaned in, her expertise as a geologist immediately engaged. She set down her cup and took control of the mouse, zooming and adjusting the image. That's unusual, she said after a moment. Those patterns don't match any natural erosion process I'm familiar with.
