The hole was getting bigger, not fast, but steady, like someone had turned on a giant heating element 3000 feet below us.
What the hell? Emily said behind me. I couldn't answer. The steam was getting thicker and I could feel warmth coming up from the hole. Actual warmth in Antarctica in January.
That's when Marilyn's voice crackled through the intercom. She sounded like she was about to throw up. Frankie, Emily, Operations right now. We ran again. I was getting tired of running through the station corridors, but apparently that was my life now.

I thought about that for a second. The thing we drilled into was waking up, and its first act was to cut us off from the rest of the world. That didn't seem like a coincidence. So we're alone, I said. We're alone, Marilyn confirmed.
The floor shuttered under our feet. Not the little vibration we've been feeling for days. A real shake, like the whole station had shifted sideways. That's not good, Emily said. Another shake, harder this time.
I grabbed the edge of the console to keep from falling over. Through the window I could see the drill site. The hole was definitely bigger now. Steam was rising up in thick clouds, and I could see that weird phosphorescent glow getting brighter. The third shake knocked us all to our knees.
Emergency shelter, Emily said. Now, I'd never been in the emergency shelter module, didn't even know exactly where it was until Emily LED us there. Turns out it's basically a reinforced bunker attached to the main station by a short corridor. The walls are thick steel, and the windows are these tiny reinforced things that look like they could stop a bullet or maybe a building collapse.
We made it inside just as the real shaking started. Not individual tremors anymore, but a continuous rumble that made my teeth rattle. I pressed my face against one of the little windows, watched the main station start to lean. Is it supposed to do that? I asked.
No, Emily said she was checking the shelter's systems. Emergency air, emergency power, emergency rations. Definitely not. The station leaned farther. I could see the ice platform underneath it starting to crack.
Not melt like the drill hole, but actually crack and split apart in these long, jagged lines. The foundation's going, I said. Marilyn was at another window. Look at the hole. I looked.
The drill hole wasn't a hole anymore. It was a chasm, maybe 50 feet across and getting wider. The steam was so thick I couldn't see the bottom. But that glow was stronger than ever, bright enough to light up the whole drill site. The main station tilted past the point of no return.
I watched it slide sideways into the widening crack in the ice. All those months of work and equipment and my bunk with the submarine book just disappearing into this glowing pit. It should have made noise. A building falling apart should crash and bang and make all kinds of racket. But all I could hear was the low hum that had been getting stronger for days.
Except now it wasn't just coming from below us. It was everywhere. Whatever we drilled into, Emily said. It's fully active now. I kept watching through the window.
The ice around the chasm was melting in these perfect concentric circles, like someone was drawing with a giant compass. The thing down there wasn't just hot, it was precise, controlled, moving toward the surface. I pulled out my phone to record what I was seeing. Figured somebody should document this, even if we couldn't transmit it anywhere.
The screen was dead. Not broken, not drained, just black. I tried the emergency recorder. Nothing. The backup GPS unit.
Nothing. Everything's fried, I said. Marilyn nodded. Electromagnetic pulse, maybe, Or just interference. Whatever that thing is, it doesn't like our technology.
The chasm was maybe 200 feet across now. I could see layers of ice disappearing as whatever was down there melted its way up through 15,000 years of Antarctic winter. The glow was getting brighter, more complex, like looking at the lights of a city from an airplane, except the city was buried under 3000 feet of ice.
I was about to give up on recording anything when I remembered the old analog equipment in the shelter's emergency kit. Found a battery powered voice recorder that looked like it came from the 80's, the kind with actual cassette tapes. I hit record and held it up to my ear. The little motor was running.
That's when I heard it. Under the mechanical hum, under the sound of ice cracking and steam rising, there was something else. Something organic, a rhythm that wasn't quite regular enough to be a machine, breathing deep and slow and vast, like something the size of a building taking its first breath in 15,000 years.
I held the recorder closer to the window. The sound was definitely coming from the chasm, from whatever was moving up through all that melted ice. The breathing got stronger, more distinct, and I realized it wasn't just one thing down there. It was many things, all breathing in unison, all waking up.
