I ran.
I drove too fast. I knew it and kept going anyway.
The wet asphalt on the curves north of Tillamook pulls at the tires in a particular way — a kind of soft lateral give that tells you exactly how close you are to losing it — and I felt that give more than once in the first twenty minutes and didn't back off much. The heater was running. The radio was off. The tree line came in close on both sides through Beaver and I barely registered it. I was watching the road and not thinking, which is not something I'm normally capable of, but it was working fine right then.
What I'd seen didn't have language yet. That's the honest description of where I was. "I went back," I said.
A pause. "I know."

Another pause, longer. When he spoke again, his voice was level and quiet. "Come to Corvallis. Now. Don't stop for anything unnecessary."
"Mark—"
"I'll explain everything when you get here. Drive carefully." He said that last part with a particular flatness that meant he knew I probably wasn't.
I kept driving.
He was awake and dressed when I arrived, which told me he hadn't slept. The house was a low ranch-style on the south edge of Corvallis, a place I'd visited maybe a dozen times over the years, and it looked exactly as I remembered it — stacked journals on the side table in the entryway, a coat rack overloaded with more coats than one man needed, the faint smell of coffee already in the air at four forty-five in the morning. Mark told me all of this the way you describe a procedure you've executed many times. Not cold — there was weight in it — but organized. Sequential. He'd clearly given some version of this explanation before, and the version I was hearing had been refined by repetition into something that covered the main objections before you raised them.
I raised them anyway.
"The excavation pits," I said. "The geometry."
"Soil sample recovery. The triangle spacing is consistent across all documented events. It's geometrically meaningful to them — or functionally meaningful, we don't know which. The pits are cut to preserve that spacing exactly."
"How many documented events."
"More than the archive holds." He said it evenly. "The archive goes back to nineteen ninety-three. The program predates it."
I sat with that for a moment. "And the blackouts. The data gaps."
"Controlled. The affected station's primary logs are pulled and transferred to a restricted federal repository. What remains in the NOAA archive is the absence. The access restriction entries. Those are genuine — they're just not the whole story."
"Brookings is still listed as operational," I said. "No data since seventeen months ago."
"Brookings is operational. The data exists. You just can't see it from where you're sitting."
I drank the coffee. It was too hot but I didn't put it down.
The logic held. That was the uncomfortable part. I could find the seams in a bad argument — I'd spent eleven years reviewing other people's atmospheric modeling, and the seam-finding was involuntary by now — and this one didn't have obvious seams. The structure was coherent. Federal entities managing recurrent, non-hostile contact events to prevent civilian panic, using existing monitoring infrastructure as an early warning layer, keeping the data restricted not because they were hiding failure but because they were managing continuity. What I didn't say, and what Mark didn't offer, was whether any of that made it right.
He told me why disclosure remained impossible and I listened to that part too. Not impossible forever, he said — that was the word he used, careful as always. Not forever. But not yet, and not unilaterally, and not through a coastal NOAA office filing anomaly reports through a contractor portal. The mechanism for any eventual disclosure, if it came, would not look like that.
The sky outside his kitchen window had been solid black when I arrived. Somewhere around five-thirty it shifted to a deep grey-blue, the kind that comes before any color shows up in the east, just a general lightening of the dark. I watched it happen while Mark refilled my mug without asking.
